I've been playing in Midian for just over a month now, and have fully enjoyed every single minute. Much of my time, however, is still spend listening quietly, observing the rp around me, and trying to improve my emoting (which is something I personally feel needs much improvement) So I apologize if she seems boring. That will change, which is the purpose of this post.

I am trying to figure out how to delve into some deeper storylines without making the newbie mistake of appearing to hijack it, or to even try to create a storyline that brings in others. My character has some definite strengths (such as political skills, business sense, and a knowledge of metals - thanks to her background), but some very definite weaknesses (she doesn't know much about guns or combat, and is noble to a fault), so I'm trying to find a place for her.

Which brings me to my questions: How did you find your character's niche (or did you already have an idea of what you wanted to accomplish when you started)? How long did it take you to find it?

In my case, my character more made his own niche through exploring the city and his relationships with others in it. I couldn't say exactly 'what' I used to find people, except that I came to the city with one contact to be Rped out, and from there it simply spider-webbed outwards. If you're not interested in a faction specifically I'd recommend finding people who you know from the city, asking OOC what large plots might be going around, and see if there's a way your character can perhaps stumble across them. With the talents you mentioned I know already that there are one or two groups that might approach her... just a matter of them knowing about her and needing new hands.

To avoid hijacking, just don't try to make it all about you. Long as everyone gets their time to shine, usually they all walk away happy. Wink

I found coming into Midian a lot like moving to a new city and getting a job. I had to take time to get to know the people, the history, and do a lot of listening. I also had to figure out who my character was in relation to these people. It was really tough at first, but worth the effort in the end.

I'd suggest getting a job at one of the bars. Snakepit, TZ, Milkbar, whatever suits your character and or, finding a faction that suits you.

There are several ways to get the "lay of the land" IMO.

One of the best is to OOC observe. Put on the Observer flip-titler, pull up the Midian mini-map and move to where the green dots are. Once there, you might IM whomever seems to be the dominant character(s) in the Scene and ask if they mind you OOC observing - and generally you will be extremely welcome. this lets you see how RP flows, and ill provide you with a valuable backgrounder, not to mention a chance to network.

One thing I advise against would be to hang out in a bar (that's as opposed to having a job...getting a job is a GREAT way to scope out the locals....just don't get so tied down that you miss the opportunity to explore....(I did that)" and wait for RP to come to you. Its better to go looking and use polite IMs to ask questions than to just "wait for things to happen"

Similarly, I'd advise against initiating anything too major until you have a chance to groove to the local etiquette. Most RP here interlocks with others, and its helpful to know WHO to IM for consent before you start planting bombs in all the public restrooms or perhaps assaulting passers-by in a "certain" part of town. RP manners are just as important as RL manners and they go a long way towards easing the transition into a new area.

But..you sound like you're good with that already Very Happy If I can help in any way, IM me in world or PM me here on the forums.

These are all good suggestions and Midian is happy you are here Nem.

Having observed you I can see that you are starting to "fit" in and I have no doubts that you will be fine.

As stated, there are many fine people here who will help and you know from our chats I am here if you need anything. Very Happy

How I found my characters niche by Ayami Imako: (snickers)

Well I personally bounced around Midian as an OOC observer for about two weeks. I was looking at the factions and RP amongst them, how and where people interacted heavily, and getting an idea for the feel of Midian. I didn't at the time even have a character in mind other then wanting to be a neko or possibly other type of hybrid cause well .. I like hybrids.

From that time spent I had decided I wanted to be a Catwalker. I liked the premise of them, and had observed alot of RP involving them and saw it was quite good and seemed like a place I would fit quite well. But I didn't come into Midian and make a b-line strait for the den. I hung around alot of the places I had seen the cats hang out when I was observing, and I also went to just common hang outs to make myself seen by Midian at large.

I've always been a sorta 'live the life' style RPer and so I would do very normal things like take a shower at the community center (which is a bad idea), go dumpster diving for free food (used to eat behind Zoe's alot) and generally find spots where I could sit and listen. I found a place to 'live' .. in my case one of the church bell towers .. that I returned to frequently so that I could be found if someone wanted to talk to me easily. It was there that I was first contacted by the walkers.

Cez Writer sent me an ooc IM asking me if I was new to town and just wondering about me. I told her I was and looking for a faction. She at the time was the lead trainer for the Catwalkers and so told me she had noticed me before and that if I kept hanging around she would come to speak with me eventually. And sure enough a couple days later her and another cat came and spoke to me during a dumpster diving session beside the church (looking for old communion wafers .. figure they are fairly safe to eat compared to other Midian trash..).

However Cez didn't take me in right away. Instead told me to basically keep doing what I was doing. Cez give me permission to go on the walks and such.. which I did and would frequently be found sitting near an antenna using it to uplink my laptop and doing .. >.> .. <.< .. stuff... often kinda shady. This was intentional because it drew the attention of more cats which I got to know then by talking to. Eventually I was taken into the walkers where I remain quite happily to this day.. having even gone to the extend of taking over for Cez as the lead trainer myself.

The moral to all this is this .. make yourself interesting and the RP will naturally flow in your direction. People will notice you, want to talk to you, and frequently you will find yourself becoming involved in their RP naturally.

I suppose "reasigned from other battalion to UAC marine corps battalion The Legion" doesnt count like a lot effort put in, eh?

Neither my first character got it hard, just came in and reported to police station, got few basics handed out by cops, wandered a week around, looking for what would suit as a job(All IC) and after a week joining MPD as it was faction suiting best.

Thanks, guys, your responses have been awesome! Even though Rena came, swept my character off her feet, and landed her in the middle of a whopping plot (thanks Rena!!), the answers here have also helped me to figure out how I will carve out my niche within the niche - act on hunches, and don't be afraid to jump right on in - sometimes mistakes can make for interesting role play (Perfectionism is a major pitfall of mine, if you can't already tell).

Once again, thanks!! And keep the stories coming, I love hearing them!
