Hello all,
I am new to the forum, and am interested in immersing myself in Midian City. Since I don't like to bumble my way through in SL (I like to do my blundering on the forums ), I wanted to ask if there are any general tips that some of the more experienced players can give me.
Specifically, do I have to do anything special to be able to fight (other than purchase a weapon?)
Are there any additional RP etiquette rules that are additional to the usual (most RP communities I've been to have their own etiquette).
I'm planning on visiting soon, to get a feel for the place before I decide to jump in. I'm a little nervous, so any help I can get would be fabulous! |

I can recommend you visit at least long enough to get the Rules NC that you are given on arrival. a lot of your questions will be answered there. _________________ My Midian City Photos

Welcome to Midian. As stated, there is much information available to you on the various notecards.
If I can be of assistance, please let me know. _________________ "YES, I KNOW your life is full of "DRAMA", but sometimes you just have to put on your big girl panties and deal with things" |

Thanks again.
I visited, and I had so much fun watching that I decided to jump right on in. I'm currently typing up a background for my character...
And you both were right. Most of my questions were answered by the notecards. I was just so nervous about making an fool of myself by making some bad RP No-Nos, that I thought I'd ask first |

It's good to ask of course.
For future reference almost all RP places in SL have a similar standard of Info at the Landing point and that area is generally OOC so you don't have to involve yourself in order to go get it _________________ My Midian City Photos

Welcome again! I have a notecard that someone gave me that does a wonderful job of explaining the concepts of RP within SL. Drop me an IM and I'd be glad to give it to you

Hehe...Glamorous, yes. I'm loving it so far!
Thanks Belial, I will certainly do that .
***Update - I found a thread that might help me on the following question, but if anyone would like to add anything, please do. (I'm still reading through the GenDiscuss forum for citizens, but it is quite large, so I'm still finding stuff). And I see that I didn't read the Background Notecard correctly. *smacks herself for being unobservant and goes back to read it again*
Now I would like to ask a few more questions, because I'm really snagging on my background. I've read through *most* of the posts here regarding characters and backgrounds, and I seem to have the general idea of Midian City itself, but I'm not sure of *how* people generally come to be there. Are people there by choice? One character referred to it as "a dump for criminals", so I am a little confused: are people sent to the city, or do criminals just flock to it? I'm trying to figure out why exactly my character would be there (she's got a few shades in her past, but is, at her essence a good girl. She just happens to have a few bad raps - and she's not above becoming a bad girl ;) ). If anyone can point me in the right direction, I'd be much obliged.
I'll admit, to start, I created a cop-out story (blow to the head - not able to remember temporarily. Cheesy, cliched, bad RP, I know) as a way to start feeling my way around and deciding if this is something I want to do long term.
Long story short - I am addicted, and now want to flesh out my character to it's fullest potential.
Question number 2: Are we allowed to refer to family members by name who do not reside in the city, and will thus never be played or introduced in-world, but may be necessary to the construction of a background and/or good storyline? I read the NPC post in General Discussion, but since that seemed to apply to in-city NPC's, I wasn't sure how the rules work for this.
Lastly, I want to thank everyone for being so patient with me. I realize that this may be annoying, but I hope that by clarifying minute details in the forum will help make for smoother play in the sim. I really want to have a good gaming experience, and not alienate/anger anyone by being a totally ignorant noob (I read Father Eamon's story in the "First Impressions" post by Belial. I DO NOT want to be that person....) |

I think a bit of both. People stow away on ships or buy passage in with Haulers, UAC or someone with access outside. Some wind up here against their will. My characters both came willingly - one looking for escape, the other to go where she wouldn't be found and make good money off the populace ;)

Sure - your background is your background. If you wanted to somehow then bring someone else in as one of your family/friends from the past, or tie in a story with them somehow, you have the ability to do that.
Welcome to the city! |

Oi! No worries, I promise. There's a big difference between being confused and new, and having a first class 'tude. You don't sound at all like the latter, so don't worry about it. :D
Stop by the church sometime. ;) _________________ The Padre's Flickr

I'd like to see the note cards people get upon entering the city posted here.
I know they go through changes, and I think I'm currently up on what's in them, but...99% of the time I fly through the taxi stand and just click discard without looking to see if there is a new version.
I think it would be helpful for people who come to the forum looking for answers and it would be helpful for those of us that have been around awhile because notes about changes could be posted here and I, for one, would be more likely to notice them sooner.
Suggestion, request, however you want to look at it. But it would be nice. _________________ http://rena-mayne.livejournal.com/

Thanks for the hint! and yes, the changes.... loooooooooots of them always. But I'll post the current version 2.52 in the 'City Guide and News' section as soon as I am online again, since that would be the place where it should be
Actually... there IS one even already that Drew posted long time ago, but indeed that is more than out-dated! we might not post all the in-depth things, but at least the current city rules and maybe the overview of the factions might be an idea. _________________
