Hi,
since I always found it disturbing to see my character typing words in the air when chatting, especially while rping, I just turned it off - yep, there IS actually an hidden option. Sound will be also disabled. So if you want to get rid of this animation just do the following:
Ctrl+Alt+D (to see/hide the "Advanced"-Menu)
Menu -> Advanced -> Debug Settings -> Type in "PlayTypingAnim" -> set to "false".
Thanks to Torley Linden and his tutorials, it got revealed finally (a while ago already). It seems that a lot of people (in Midian) don't know this (or keep it turned on for whatever reason), so I just posted it without deeply checking the forums if this has been already mentioned.

When RPing it Can be useful .. especially for paragraph or epic Rp'rs ... at least you know they're posting and not ignoring you while they write their missives

Some a.o's automatically override the typing animation anyway, at least mine do.
Also if you open the "chat" window you have "two" places in which you may type
the bottom of the screen in general and the bottom of the "chat" window.
Use one window to start typing rp actions and use the other window for ooc communication such as ((posting ))

A note for all Mac users! Yes, I use a Macbook Pro for my SL, but that's because it's the only thing I had to 'game' on for about 4 months -_-
Opt + Ctrl + D is the shortcut for the menu.
