Apologies for a really basic question, but what do people do about character names? Do you use your ordinary SL name or do you take on a new one for the game? If the latter, what do you do technically in terms of displaying names, titles etc?
I know that playing totally IC characters wouldn't have any names floating above their heads but I doubt that it's practical to rely on visual recognition of avatars (especially for someone with a memory for names and faces as bad as mine!) |

Hello Arlan.
Some players use their avatars names as IC names. Some change them IC and they use a titler to display their name.
Also I've run into some people who use as presumed name as part of thier IC "cover", again, you are likely to see that on a titler. If you need one, just let me know and I'll drop one in your inventory.

| Is it possible to turn off the display of my ordinary SL name? I know I can set a preference on my client to not show the names of other people to me, I'm thinking about displaying my name to others. It could be confusing if I was showing both my real SL name and a titled name to the world. |

No, there is no way to do that. _________________ *mew*

For me, Masha's last name is different in Midian, so she always introduces herself as Masha Delacourt.
I've rarely run into any issue since Midian RPers generally understand that unless someone TELLS you the person's name, you don't know it, nameplate or no nameplate.
So as a rule, if you want to know a person's name? Introduce yourself IC and see if they return the favor. Or get someone to ICly introduce them. Or ask someone who knows them, again, IC.
Where titlers ARE handy is when someone is using the same AV for different characters, or as somone else mentioned, an AV is in disguise and you're not supposed to recognize them. Even then, with lag or distance, it's challenging. Just the other night Masha ran into the AV Blood who was using the name Lucien and addressed him as such, before seeing the titler IDing him as "Gar". His shape and AO were the same, so it wasn't until I'd already emoted in open chat that I saw the titler and I had to retcon my post.
Cheers!
