PREFACE
Ok... We don't know how long the war lasted, but we know from the story of Midian that the desperate "final solution tests" took place in 2013, so the war was probably over either in 2013 or shortly thereafter. We also know, from the old City Guide, that the "present" in Midian is over twenty years after the final solution tests, so that puts the "present" some time after 2023. Most people I've asked seem to agree that Midian's "present" is some time in the 2030s-2050s.
Regardless of exactly when the war started or how long it lasted, we know it was over in the early 21st century, and that it was a very big war. That means that many of our characters whose stories involve being alive "during the war" would be born in the late 20th or early 21st centuries. Clearly, the WWIII of Midian history is not going to go down the way it did in our fictional universe, but it's still really weird to me that my character's approximate birthdate is probably some time in 2006. She'd be two years old in the RL universe if she were real, and depending on exactly what the present date is in Midian, her age range could be anywhere from 24 to 44. I'm leaning toward Anna being in her mid to late 30s, which puts her "present" in the 2040s, comfortably inside the 2030s-2050s range.
With that in mind, I kinda took some liberty and guessed that the war lasted about seven years. That sounds reasonable, since World War One lasted for four years, and World War Two lasted for either six years (if you're a Eurocentric pig who considers the German invasion of Poland to be the start of WWII) or eight years (if you consider the outbreak of the Second Sino-Japanese War to be the start of WWII).
ANNA'S STORY
Anna's was born in Nanjing, China in the early days of the war. Her mother was a university student, and her father was a young professional from America. Anna never knew her father, since the government of the Peoples' Republic of China forced almost all foreigners to leave the country when the war started.
Single and rejected by her family, Anna's mother was forced to quit her studies and work to support herself and her new baby. Finding legitimate work and housing became increasingly difficult as the war dragged on, so much of Anna's childhood was spent in rough housing or living on the streets. She learned from a young age how to scrounge for food and other necessities.
Anna had no knowledge of it, but her mother did her best to save as much money as she could, often neglecting her own needs to make sure that Anna had enough to eat. Her health steadily declined as she hid money away until the day she could afford to pay for herself and Anna to escape China and sail to America. The long journey to America aboard one cargo vessel after another did not help Anna's mother's health. Anna and her mother spent the next two years begging, borrowing, and stealing their way from LA to Atlanta in an attempt to locate Anna's father, but they were never able to find him.
Weakened by disease and heartbreak, Anna's mother died, leaving Anna alone on the mean streets at the age of twelve. Anna had little time to mourn for her mother. Her history of life on the street allowed her to adapt quickly to fending for herself among the gangs and homeless masses of post-war Atlanta. She was well on her way to living a short, violent life when somebody came to take her away from it all at the age of sixteen.
"See the world! Meet new people!" said the recruiter from the Global Security Corporation. What the GloboSec brochures and posters didn't say was that after meeting them, you were supposed to kill them.
Anna embraced the opportunity to get off the streets and make something of herself. She excelled at training and quickly found herself in field assignments augmenting military and police forces in Eastern Europe, North Africa, and Southeast Asia. Anna's rapid rise through the ranks and her experience with urban combat and guerilla tactics made her a natural choice for the GloboSec mission in Midian. Upon her reassignment to the MPD, Anna discovered that there were some things she was prepared for and many things that she had never imagined possible waiting for her on the city's streets.
Never one to back down from a challenge, Anna jumped headfirst into the job and soon became Chief of the Midian Police Department. Now she considers the city her home, much to the chagrin of her superiors on the mainland, who fear that the leadership of the MPD has "gone native." _________________ You have the right to remain silent.
