Tonight I RPed putting a memory chip inside a girls head so she could skip some training as a Japanese entertainer (so she could use RL knowledge that did not fit her character history). I of course used a technology level more advanced then what we have today but basing it on real research.

Please comment on anything that does not fit the Midian level of technology.

[21:39] Stephan Nephilim turns to her and asks "are you ready? the program is already loaded into the memory core. Do you have any questions?"

[21:40] Seraphym Constantine thinks a moment "Your sure this is safe, and I wont be changed with the exception of gaining knowledge?" pausing to chew at her lip again.."And is it going to hurt?"

[21:43] Stephan Nephilim shakes his head reasuringly "It's perfectly safe, there has not been an accident with professional integration in years. All you gain in the knowledge, but you might be a little different, the same way you might be different if you read a really thought provoking book.", he thinks about her next question, "and you will not feel a thing, shutting off nerves is a very simple matter. I can give you a local anesthetic if you are really worried, but that will feel odd. Come here, I'll show you on the picture what I'm doing"

[21:44] Seraphym Constantine shakes her head "I'll take your word for it, your the professional." shifting her gaze from him to the wall.

[21:45] Stephan Nephilim gestures to the blue area on the brain picture "first I'll stop all nerve sensation in this area with a small sonic device, it will feel kind of like when you sit on a speaker too long and your but goes numb"

[21:45] Seraphym Constantine smiles as she's done that before, but not for a casual sitting place.

[21:46] Seraphym Constantine looks back to him "So, how long will this take?.." deciding better to just get it over with "and where do you want me?"

[21:46] Stephan Nephilim then while you do not feel anything, a small sonic device will peel back your skin, not even cutting your hair but between your hair folicles. I can then open your skull like I would the trunk of a car.

[21:47] Seraphym Constantine tries not to gag at the mental immage of that..."I see..."

[21:47] Stephan Nephilim smiles thinking she is probably tired of the explanation already as she moves back "On the cot near the monitor is fine."

[21:48] Stephan Nephilim thinks "The whole procedure, maybe an hour or two.", adds to that "But your skull will only be open for a few minutes."

[21:48] Seraphym Constantine walks over and hops up onto the talbe in a way too girlish manner, letting her feet dangle off the side a moment as if she's rethinking before laying down.

[21:48] Stephan Nephilim nods looking her over "alright, hold still while I turn on the monitors and programs"

[21:49] Seraphym Constantine takes a deep breath, trying to relax, her eyes fallowing his every move as she does her best to remain motionless.

[21:50] Stephan Nephilim types a few things on the keyboard and with a slight hum the monitors go on, flickering for the briefest moment and then coming into full view

[21:51] Stephan Nephilim then takes a small bottle of clear liquid labeled disinfectant gloves and applies it to his hands, arms and over his beard and hair. The gel acts like a surgical mask and gloves until he is done.

[21:52] Stephan Nephilim before walking back he takes a small round chip off the computer picks it up carefully and carries it over to the surgical table

[21:53] Seraphym Constantine slows her breath, hoping its okay to close her eyes, figuring if she just relaxes as if she were laying in bed, thing might go more smoothly

[21:55] Stephan Nephilim taking out a small penlike instrument with a large rounded tip, he bends over and draws several invisible circles behind the back of her ear over her hair. After a minute or two of this he takes a needle off his tray and pokes several times in the middle of the circle where the nerves should no longer be sending signals "Do you feel anything when I poke?"

[21:56] Seraphym Constantine speaks softly, keeping her eyes closed "No." hoping that's how it's suposed to be.

[21:57] Stephan Nephilim nods and pets her outside the numb zone "good", he then takes another pen like instrument, this one looking almost like a large red ink pen with small holes all around the tip. He tells her "This will cut your skin where it's numb, and push your hair out of the way while it does it so as to not damage your beautifull look."

[21:58] Seraphym Constantine smiles, she was amazed with how much she'd come to trust him as she'd never had done anything like this in her old life on the mainland.

[22:00] Stephan Nephilim leans over and starts to rub the small pen like instrument along her scalp, working on a principle of high powered ultra sound that dislodges cell cohesion instead of cutting or burning them, it makes a cell thin cut along her scalp, leaving behind a lubricant so the cells to not seal the cut right away.

[22:02] Stephan Nephilim finishing his 'U' shaped cut, the then changes the setting on the scalpel and starts to run it back and forth along the bottom of the U, slowly peeling the skin upwards until all that can be seen is a clear white skull under the 2 inch hole

[22:03] Seraphym Constantine lets her mind wander, thinking about all she might learn instantly from this and pushing out the reaccuring thought that she didnt research this completely. She was glad she couldnt see what he was doing, she was way to squeemish despite her curiosity.

[22:04] Stephan Nephilim putting the ultra sound scalpel back, he takes a slightly larger instrument, a laser scalpel. It's callibrated to cut material of only a certain density, so he proceeds to quickly run it in a circle upon her open skull knowing that it will only cut bone and he could pass it as many times as he wanted over flesh and it would do nothing.

[22:05] Stephan Nephilim laying down the laser scalpel, he picks up something that almost looks like a small suction cup, lays it on the back of the cut skull and pulls it off leaving a nice hole too look inside her head where he can clearly see her occipital lobe "We're half way done the surgery Sera"

[22:06] Seraphym Constantine simply smiles, a little afraid to talk, is if it would move her too much.

[22:09] Stephan Nephilim then takes the small round processor core and lays it carefully against her brain. The core sensing the right chemical conditions, starts to release a faint glow and unseen to either Sera or even Stephan who is staring at it, a series of hundreds of needles no wider then dentrites on neurons dig deep into her brain, pushing inside until they reach several prearranged sections of her brain, notably her hippocampus where memories are processed. Seeing only the color change slighty on the core he nods accepting that the operation is working.

[22:11] Stephan Nephilim taking the small circular piece of skull, still attached to it's handle, he inserts it back against her skull. Putting the suction pen back in the tray he pulls out a small gel tube and lays it around the cut in her skull. Near instantly the calcium gel is absorbed into the skull and the near microscopic cut can no longer be seen.

[22:13] Stephan Nephilim then closes the 'flap' of skin and hair carefully and takes something resembling a small spray can and sprays what feels like just a can of air into her hair. This "air" is a neutraliser for the lubricant allowing the cells to regain their bonds with such a cellular level cut.
[22:14] Stephan Nephilim smiles and lifts Sera's chin "it's all done, I just have to activate the neural interface now. You can stand or sit up if you like"

[22:14] Seraphym Constantine opens her eyes with a blink.."Your finished?" having felt nothing and noticing little as she'd slipped into a daydream state she sits up, waiting a moment before standing.

[22:15] Stephan Nephilim smiles at Sera patting his desk for her to sit on if if she likes "Now, don't be suprised at no change at first. The memories will not show up unless you think about them, sort like how you don't remember last christmas unless you think about it."

Justification for the instruments:
Disinfectant glove gel: There is already a product called magic glove that basically is a wash off glove, I figured it was not too far fetched to think it was possible (and explains why I have no sink in my operating room).

Ultra sound scalpel: It's known that ultra sound can be used at different wavelengths to affect the cohesion of different materials (destroying kidney stones is an example of this).

Cellular lubricant: A lubricant to stop healing I think is maybe a little far fetched and not practical. Of course I do not even mention how the blood vessels are cauterized. Perhaps I should have said a sealant, but at the time "a sealant to stop the cells from sealing" sounded a bit confusing.

Calibrated Laser scalpel: I regreted this one as soon as I pressed enter, but I wanted variety from the ultra sound scalpel. In retrospect given that ultra sound CAN be calibrated to break different densities and as far as I know lasers can't, I'll use an ultra sound scalpel on bone too.

The suction cup pen: Ok sounds stupid but I needed something to remove the skull especially that the cut is supposedly very tight.

Small round processor core containing memories: Each person will have a different view of what a neural network might look like, I figured different companies around the world will make them look differently depending on their function and quality. The glowing part just looks cool and I do not think is very realistic. As for the growing ultra thin needles going deep in her brain, I figure it would work on the same principle as crystal growth where they build upon the previous molecular structure.

Calcium Gel: Not hard to imagine an artificial bone glue, especially if it's only good for micro fractures.

Spray on neutraliser for the lubricant (or should have been a sealant): Not hard to imagine an odorless colorless gas that reacts chemically either, think carbon monoxide for a simpler example.

Memories coming slowly when she tries to recall them: This was more an ooc thing so that when she had to, she could apologise for not having perfect memory or customs yet as she has to actually think about something to realise she knows it, as well for it not radically changing her character over night.

As for where he got the equipement, he had the help of three 'friends' or investors who have access to money and smuggling. The RP of getting the equipement lasted about 1 1/2 weeks.

Suggestions are welcome.

PS: I avoided any sort of medical nano technology as many seem to think this would be even more expensive then regular technology.

I edited the paste to add spacing, removed the friends online messages , added the 'tools' in bold and added the PS.

hehe .. I´ve done worse things in the chimera lab (cloning, implants, experimental medical treatments .. the wilder the better) so don´t worry about procedures that much. The bigger problem is what some people request to be done and what they are doing with it. And implanted knowledge is something I would have been really really carefull about. In fact, I had cases when my work has been used in a ´inapropirate´ RP manner and belive me, that is something that didn´t make you feel well about doing this kind of things.

Thats why I have started to talk about it OOCly with the people first and then write a notecard about what the implant would do, how it would work and what limitations it would have. I would even say, that this is far more important then the procedure to put it in (this is the fun part ;) ). Of course there is also the question of where to get the equipment needed to build a memory holding device. This is your part of the RP and as the patient has his or her things to consider, it is the RP of the one who is setting such things in, to think about if it would be actually possible and how long it would take and who to ask to get (maybe Black Star) or build (maybe the biomechs) the parts needed (I had to ask for people to set those things in, but finding a skilled surgeon was a difficult thing, so I had to find a way to work with what I had).

So if you ask about what is correct or not, don´t think too much about the procedure but more about everything around it. It is a dynamic RP with different people in a big city and going out there to find the right person is as much fun and RP opportunity as it is for the patient to find someone to do this kind of work.

And have fun .. hehe .. I know how much it can be Smile

Heh, its also usually hard to find a "willing" patient in Midian who'll allow you to implant something in their brain. After a while, they twig to the idea that it might be easy to implant something that can "influence" them as well as "help" them.

After all, this is Midian - the real altruistic good-guys are somewhere else.

The Remade have an implantation procedure, however it requires no specialist knowledge of advanced sciences. The Remade, as a whole, are crude yet functional when it comes to doing business and the implant device is little more than a pneumatic cross between a gun and something a tattooist would use. Of course the implant itself is a little more advanced, but nothing on the nanotechnology scale.

Hey there!

This came up in a recent scene where a severe trauma patient hit the MCMC and Masha answered the call.

I did what I always do, IM the player to find out the extent of their injuries, get a sense of their goal, and how long they want the scene to be. I was told that his lung was "pretty bad" and that he was "kinda hoping" for an implant.

FYI, if folks are wanting anything but standard, high care, ethical and quality medical treatment, don't go to Masha. She's old school. And while we have our fancy diagnostic tools and some pretty handy surgical devices (courtesy of the last Chief of Staff), biomechanical stuff isn't our gig.

Happily, the player was an excellent RPer and understood immediately - I offered to let him void the scene if what he was after was parts but he chose to go with it and he got a nice long surgery, which included mechanical parts of the old-fashioned kind - plates and pins for a shattered humerus.

For the lung (he had a hemothorax), he got a chest tube Very Happy Problem solved.

Unless things have changed rather drastically and Masha didn't get the memo, the MCMC is not where you go for biomechanical upgrades, Remade propaganda aside.

If parts are the goal, please let the doctor who responds know before they stop what ever they're doing and show up at the MCMC!

Cheers!
-M

Well the thing is that where it gets interesting is side effects. Hows its done is of course interesting but seldom as much as what comes after. You have to remember is there is only finite room inside the human skull and the brain is a very fragile thing... such a surgery would almost certainly have unwanted effects as well as positive. Think in Johnny Pneumonic terms .. synaptic seepage, memory loss, or maybe when you see the color purple you smell gym socks... the possibilities are endless. If you want new memories in such a artificial fashion you usually have to pay a price .. and I don't mean credits. Something else to consider.
