I join in on Artika's opinion - but then as well Chandra is one of those 'high-end fashion victims', which has of course IC and backstory-reasons. And with her character, she would surely rather die than be seen in some worn-out old pair of jeans - gotta love vanity as biggest flaw. *chuckles*
Regarding the 'where from', she did get a good amount of the 'exclusive' stuff as presents or toll of respect for her position. As well with her fashion background she is able to create her own clothing if needed. Sometimes the hapless victim she ran into had something she liked... so with all the time in the city there is a collection growing. *laughs*
And same as Artika mentioned, her necklace triggered quite a few RPs in the past, and I assume will still in the future as well. So if somebody thinks they should rob her, they might end as dinner, but can be fun RP.
In general I think everybody can have their own style without problems, neko's are mutated already anyway, so why not wear short skirts and take more radiation. *laughs* same for biomechs and vampires, it's not gonna kill them and I guess one could argue a certain 'tolerance' that has built in the system of everybody. But then, honestly: do we really have to worry about clothing? I think there are far more important issues to take care of than what people wear. Clothing is in my opinion something that could be come by with reasonable explaination, unlike some of the other stuff that people have. _________________

I agree with Chandra, Pera usually dresses down, but she does dress up on occasion and I RP it as the item was a hard to come by thing that I waited months for the delivery of from various supply sources available on Midian or simply made myself. Anyway, fashion police is something not needed in Midian, far more important issues at hand, like machine guns, endless bullets and this and that grenade/bomb out of nowhere. _________________ (Pera Sutekh, twin sis of Chigaru) BIO!>Pera

I understand the position Cez is coming from, the concern being, well, playing in an area where supplies by their nature are somewhat limited, wouldn't that have a bearing on what people could wear.
I think though the counterpoints others have mentioned are very strong also. It would be more of a salient concern if say like, the city's build didn't do a good job of properly promoting the atmosphere and mood. Limits on what you could wear, of course, then would greatly benefit in contributing to the "mood."
But from what I've seen. Midian is quite impressive.
If we were to limit say, what one could wear, it does put a crimp for those who have spent the time (and dare I say, Linden as well, should they not have a talent for designing certain things) to acquiring a hefty wardrobe/accessories, that are suitable for all kinds of situations. Not only that, it does take away one of biggest benefits of SL... complete avie customization that gives you the potential to look unique.
Of course, there are some understood limits, which I think are hinted at in the notecards. I know the look I have probably wouldn't qualify as "post apocalyptic," (I would say, he prolly fits a steampunk setting) to most, but I can, refer ppl to any number of European postapocalyptic films where the lesser known characters did in fact, dress the way Lancer does. As far as movies go for reference, it's simply a matter of the artistic designer and the base set of clothing materials they see in their head, and the clothing fashion/styles they are drawing from based on their cultural background/exposure. And in my case, I really wanted to advertise "bookish" and "scholarly" qualities with his look.
Of course, I too, have reasons as well as to why I actually can now, change my wardrobe every so often. Not every day mind you (the amount of changes some people can do is just impressive), but there have been some roleplayed out scenes that have happened that justify why I may "dress up" or not.
The explanations people give for various clothes are all reasonable and valid; I'd even go so far as to say, if you see something that is odd to your character, why not ask them where they got it? Heh. It might provide an interesting roleplayed scene. |

That is a great idea and I agree about the different aesthetics and influences....if you take Blade Runner, which is one place Pera takes her's from, Rachel dresses quite nicely and Priss dons quite a few odd costumes, etc, Dune they dress for battle, Pera is very cyberpunk sometimes like City of Lost Children, or Steampunk at others. She is a vampire who likes styles of the past. Her brother, Chi, loves to ruin her new outfits and KAOS disguises to aggrivate her, since they are so hard to come by. _________________ (Pera Sutekh, twin sis of Chigaru) BIO!>Pera

Just to make it clear: I dont want any restriction on what people can wear!! I was just thinking about various clothing and midian and wondered what other thought about that subject.
Im NOT trying to convince people to change their clothes, not at all. Everybody let their character wear what they thinks fits their character which is totally fine by me. Its just interesting to hear different peoples thoughts and views. _________________ IC Blog: http://cezdiary.blogspot.com/ |

Whatever, Cez...we all know you're trying to start Midian's own "What Not to Wear" tv show. _________________ *mew*

Neat question!
For Masha, she had a trunk of clothing when she was dumped in Midian. Over time, her clothes have gotten more and more raggedy, either from use, or because she's turned into quite the scavenger out in the ruins.
OOCly, my favorite shopping is hunting down "distressed" or torn or frayed clothing that is high quality in terms of textures and design. I actually chortle, yes CHORTLE when I find something cool.
For Runya, her hair is now longer and in messy braids, her jeans are something she found and they're too big, her top is more challenging because she's eight and most clothing for kids in SL is disgustingly, horridly, INSIPIDLY pastel and cutsey and the adult stuff all has shading for breasts or pecs. But I have a small collection of tops for her that I love and addresses the issue of her being alone and orphaned in Midian for several months.
Cheers!

From character point of view, anyone wearing nice dress and high heels is deemed a bit touched in the head by Mordag - Seeing Midian city where you can get into a fight on every corner, even when maybe not so often lately, Mordag would really hate to get cought in fight in dress on high heels. Thats like I-lose-button. You cannot fight properly, you cannot run. This factor also makes everyone on this point very suspicious character to her, mad people are hard to handle. |
Yeah, but some of us like to lose. I just wear what suits the character to me. Rena, she's connected and well off and has access to pretty much anything she wants within reason. She started out grungy and grimy, but evolved. She's had a job with an off island company for quite some time that's not well known, but is not a huge secret either.
I look at other characters like Sakito, who's from a wealthy family, Chandra...would make sense she looks good, she's a powerful woman with a powerful family...
I just see people's clothing choices as a reflection of their character. Doesn't usually take me out of the mood of the sim. _________________ http://rena-mayne.livejournal.com/

I guess wardrobes have no limits really, based on where people came from and what they may have brought with them. Al's family was wealthy, parents died when she was 10, so she was left with the family fortune in a trust as the only child. Even though money isn't an object, however, she dresses to fit the city most of the time while off duty. 90% of the time though, you'll see her in uniform. When not, she keeps a tougher look largely because she feels she'll look weak or fragile if she dresses too girlish.
There's always the uniform...stylin', I'm tellin ya. _________________ "The worst kind of evil is the evil that thinks it is good." - Collin Matthews

Actually, they don't come from thin air Some of us put a LOT of work into smuggling in those lethal toys so we can sell them to the rest of you...... *grin* Just doing my part to help Mr. Darwin keep the gene-pool tidy......
Just dial 1-900-I-NEED-GUNS and for a (high) price, someone will be happy to outfit you. Its cash-up-front tho I'm afraid......many prospective customers don't survive long enough to make "payment-over-time" work well for the suppliers.
I will toss in a free body-bag with every 1000 rounds of "Ball" ammo, and if you buy a case of C4 or Semtex - I add in the "Suicide Bomber" vest for free.
((Just kidding with this post. Yes, some groups DO make their way by smuggling conventional weapons, but I'm all too aware that "Megatech" is becoming a HUGE issue, and on that point I vastly agree with Pera. *huggz P*)) _________________ ~Deb Charron
