Many know or at least have seen the small coyote woman in passing, her Kreyol accent a lyric, white teeth against dark skin. She's a Ranger in the Midian Park, a Resident at the MCMC, and was once among the Centurions of the Sarcina. She has friends in strange places and her faith in the intricate beliefs of Vodou, well, nothing is more rock solid.

Her veves, those tapestries in flour, or cornmeal, or even gunpowder, they can be found in odd little nooks and crannies all over the island, the remnants of offerings to be found with them. She's consistent, that one, keeping them fresh, making her honors.

Rumor has it she's also what's called a manbo, a healing woman, some sort of witch doctor or a crazy black lady possessed of spirits. She's set herself up in those brownstones above the Park, growing herbs, making gris gris, conjuring up pwen, setting out wanga, mixing up bowls of oil and setting candles to float, providing herbs for baths. Old time religion, African in roots, in the dark, under the red of the Midian sky.

She won't take money. She won't take things. She wants to hear your story and then she decides. Or sometimes, one of her spirits does the deciding for her.

There's truth sprinkled through the hyperbole, the supersition. Word's getting out that she'll help those who have no other recourse.

Old fashioned herbal doctoring, partnered with Masha's modern medical training, treating things that the world of science rarely acknowledges - illness of the spirit, of the heart. Protection, of the body, of the mind. Inspiration, maybe even love, loyalty rekindled. Fearlessness, after attack or in battle. Purification for those few who want it. Maybe even a glimpse of the future. Or the past.

And sometimes, if the need is great and there is no other hope, when the lwa, the ancestral spirits say it is so, a bane to an enemy. The old way. The thorough way. The lasting way, with blood, and bone, and hair, and skin. With the soul. The way of Guinea.

Manbo she is, and Masha never says no to a good story.

((RP only, Masha's setting up a botanica outside her new brownstone in Apoc. Look up and find the table and chairs and the potted plants. Feel free to contact IC if anyone wants Vodou in their IC lives.

All consent rules apply))

General OOC consent rules and power balance with Vodou magics:

(1) If it is a targeted item, such as a curse, a blessing, or anything in between, consent MUST be given via IM or notecard from all parties involved before I'll initiate the RP.

(2) If it is an item to be worn, carried, burned, put under the pillow or what have you, an ointment or oil for the threshhold, or even something etched on the body, a notecard will be created to give to people who take IC action that might trigger the magic. I suggest that a short note should be put into the profile.

(3) If an IC scene may activate a Vodou magic, IM the other person and explain - offer the notecard. Make sure they get that this is not to be a get out of jail free card but an opportunity for interesting RP, perhaps a challenge, and hopefully fun. THEY HAVE THE RIGHT TO SAY NO. Not everyone acknowledges faith-based magic (or magic in general) in Midian and that's totally okay.

(4) Workarounds ALWAYS exist - nothing is perfect or unassailable and as most folks Masha would make these for are not of the faith, they are less potent than anything worn or wielded by a true Voduissant.

(5) The magics aren't simple - there are rules about keeping the various workings fresh, how potent they are and under what circumstances. They can however, make for some interesting and engaging RP even when both parties know that the Vodou magic will ultimately not be enough.

Ultimately, the rules will be worked out OOCly to best facilitate fun RP for the person getting the magics - that's the whole point Very Happy Everything created will be something customized for the person seeking Masha's expertise.

Feel free to ask any questions here or in-world!

Cheers!

There's no secrecy other than the privacy of the person asking. Masha is entirely open about her faith and considers it a joyous means of religious expression. All of this draws from that faith.

Now, the person probably shouldn't just walk up to her in the middle of the street and say, "Hey, can you curse somebody for me?" Better to just see if they can talk with her privately Very Happy

Well, here's the thing: In real life, I am NOT an initiated Vodouissant. For Masha my character, I've done my best to research, read, and consult with a Houngon friend (now in Georgia due to Katrina) who shares non-initiatory information with me and tolerantly answers odd questions like, "Holy crap, I need to perform a Vodou wedding for non-practitioners, help!" or "Can a vampire be possessed?". I have done my best to respect the real religion that exists so as not to offend them and every time I RP her, I hope I'm succeeding.

In real life, there's HUGE House wars and there are groups selling initiations for thousands of dollars, even to the Asson (the priest grade) then sending these people back to whereever, the new initiates thinking they're Vodouissants. Haiti is a very poor country which fosters this. But it causes the House wars over legitimacy, who's "real" versus someone who's a dilettante. So that would be an IC history as well, which means:

IC: Masha was born into her House - Vodou is the faith of her family for generations. She desperately misses having a honfour and would be grateful and humbled to have others who wished to be Hounsi. If your character is serious about doing this, I'm game! Masha would expect a real show of faith and dedication, commitment to making honors and serving the lwa. It would not happen overnight and the RP would have to unfold slowly, over time.

So, erm, the short version, let's RP it out and see what happens!

Cheers!
