Something I love to do IC as Pera is 'newbie hunt' and I know I am not alone in this. Find a newbie looking for the bad dark atmosphere with involving roleplay they hear about and are looking for with wide eyes and make a meal of it.
What I thought might be a good idea, to further help in changing this label we are getting for OOC unfriendliness, is holding a newbie hunt.
What would happen, we pick one day of every week, maybe at two times during that day for a 2 hour period, one time frame for US, one for European friendly. But other than that it would happen the same day of the week and the same times so that we could post this in the Midian notecard and let newbies know that day is their day to get their foot in the door so to speak.
During those times, everyone would be encouraged to find a newbie and RP with them in any capacity suiting your character. This way, no one has to compromise character integrity by being nice IC, we would all be "actively" looking for newbies to roleplay with, so we are not leaving it to them to approach us, which can be very daunting to them.
Also, if there are not enough newbs to hunt at that time, then, alternatively, find someone to RP with during these set times that you never have RP'd with before.
This would make being friendly OOC and roleplaying IC a lot of fun I think, all while welcoming newbs and getting them oriented with actual roleplay experience.
Anyway, I think it would be fun, sorta like a treasure hunt for all involved, would break up a little monotony too if there were any existing. _________________ (Pera Sutekh, twin sis of Chigaru) BIO!>Pera

I think it's a great idea, Aegy.
While I often don't make it out the Peep Show door anymore, I've interacted with probably half a dozen "new-to-Midian" people the past week alone. I've hired two of them, and have some interesting entanglements with two others. They're out there, and if we all take a little time to engage them, hopefully they'll stick around in our community.
Even if Lucy pays the mercs a whole lot of money to gun one of them down ;) |

Eep! I should have read the entire post ;-( I saw "n00b hunt" and ran out to buff my body-count. The good news is that I still have all the individual parts of the first three I ran into and I've removed that big wad of plastique wrapped in barbed-wire I'd planted in the Taxi Stand (with a detonator attached to a sign saying "Click-For-Free-MegaPenis-Attachment-and Gun"...so....Markko...STOP clicking the sign). I promise to return the body parts I collected to their rightful owners and will henceforth READ the entire post before I start slotting people.
Just kidding of course
I think Pera has a dandy idea and I plan to participate. This will build the sim and prolly uncover some diamonds in the rough..which we need.
Ok...its more complicated than declaring "F**k-Up a Stranger" Day.... but the results will be better doing it Pera's way. _________________ ~Deb Charron

I think it's entertaining, also in that people you 'think' are newbies might not be, and you may end up collecting a few new instruments of fun roleplay. ;)
It's a good counter against the 'niche' that all of us will tend to unwittingly put ourselves in of playing with familiar players. Because, face it... you WILL play with people you are familiar with. Whether you exclude newbs or not, this is something that every human being performs because of the pack/group mentality. Just a good way to get around and go crazy. _________________ "In this world everyone is either played, or playing with someone else. Be it their body, mind, heart, or soul. I love the idea! Chandra is hunting new players most of the time anyway, it just is so much easier to eat people that will not knock with their full faction at your door afterwards. *winks*
Anyway, the good thing about playing with new RPers is that besides figuring out how they play and eventually discovering some 'raw diamond' out there is just the fact that being in scene with them allows also to teach them things that you notice they are not aware off, or be available for them to answer questions of the 'why did you just emote that?'-nature.
Sooooo... yes. hunting them should be more than fun! haha. I'm in! _________________

| That is one of the great joys of the Community Center, in that so many new people to Midian show up there and it gives me a chance to meet them and see what they are looking for. |

good idea
I, personally, tend to hang near the taxi stand quite frequently for just this purpose. I get in the mood to drag some poor soul kicking and screaming into the dark underbelly of Midian, and the Taxi Stand is the best place to do so :-p |

Just a contary opinion I will use an analogy.
When you are hungry for a big mac , McDonalds does not chase you down and say "Hey want fries with that"
You go to McDonalds and "ask" for what you want.
I believe that we should be encouraging people to generate their own roleplay and be self sufficiant.
I certiantly won't "Hunt" a NOOB, if I encounter one I may well "Acknowledge" them, but what I will not do is "throw" rp at them.
Bassically if people are new and having difficulty finding roleplay IM me and I'll give a few pointers on how to generate your own roleplay.
Again, I appriciate the sentiment of this idea, but I do respectfully believe from the way it is "planned" that it simply will cater to people who truely need to be "Spoon fed" roleplay.
And that is not what we should be encouraging. Maybe a "guide" or a list of "hints & tips" to help people "get started" would be more proactive.
As it would "firmly" put the power in the players hands, rather than have them wait for someone to randomly throw roleplay in their lap.
I may well "raid" from time to time, if a newbie wants in then simply stick on the appropirate title and we'll drag you off too.
that's a random encounter that can come up, also make sure to join the appopriate special interest groups......
but if a person is truely looking for an experience of the dark and nasty kind, if i'm wearing an ic tag and am in a public place just throw a random IM at me.
But i won't go canvasing for a particular style of roleplay, I like things to unfold more organically... and like to have "proof of roleplay" before I say "Oh hell it's newbie day now i'll rape you" and then have a very bitter taste in my mouth. I'll observe rp, if I think it meets my own minimum standards ((not being a snob here, I just have prefrences )) then i'll initiate rp with someone. Like wise if I don't meet someone elses standards I expect to be refused consent and we both go on our merry way.
just my two cents. _________________ The above statements are opinions of the person behind the name "Charles Noble" these opinions may change over time, they may not agree with your opinon, that is the nature of opinions. Endevour to debate the "issue" not the "Person" |

Babies don’t go to McDonalds. Their mothers chase them down and spoon feed them. |

I've mentioned this i'm sure on some other thread. An old saying springs to mind
Give a man a fish, he'll eat for a week maybe
teach a man to fish he'll eat forever.
My point is if we spoon feed people they will become expectant of being spoonfed.
the important thing to encourage is initiative, giving people the tools to generate their own roleplay.
If you spoon a person you'll be expected to constantly spoon feed them.
A lot of people complain about not being able to find roleplay.
A lot of people have not tried to initiate roleplay and have waited for it to fall into their lap.
Yes people who are new will make mistakes, that's expected.
Heck even old timers will make mistakes.
However the one tip i'll give away is this
Don't be a neutral character, if you want to find roleplay, give your character first and foremost an agenda..a goal... better still an unreachable goal, but let it drive your roleplay, make it something that could involve anyone.
Once you have an agenda, rp will generate for you if you are true to your character. _________________ The above statements are opinions of the person behind the name "Charles Noble" these opinions may change over time, they may not agree with your opinon, that is the nature of opinions. While what you say is true, Charles, I think if you give them one fish to entice them with its taste, you will find they are far more eager to learn the fishing lessons you offer. _________________ "In this world everyone is either played, or playing with someone else. Give a man a match, he'll be warm for a short time.
Set him on fire, and he'll be warm for the rest of his life.
Of course, by 'match' and 'set on fire', I'm refering to the degree of roleplay here. Well, mostly I thought it was a cool aphorism for Midian.
If you involve a noob only to the extent of a short conversation, 'toss them a bone', they'll be interested only for as long as the conversation lasts. If you suck them into your roleplay, get them involved, they'll catch fire. Or something. |

Only takes that one match to set a raging fire, if placed in the right spot under the correct circumstances.

Or even consider it handing them a pole, with no interaction, we are neither feeding nor teaching either one, just losing most of them to starvation. This would only break the ice so they can learn to fish and I do not think a one time help out is going to spoil them.
We could use a drug analogy too, get them addicted and they will find a way to come back and play by any means possible.
Anyway, thanks everyone for your comments of support and constructive criticisms. _________________ (Pera Sutekh, twin sis of Chigaru) BIO!>Pera

I agree.
Okay, now that I've done the stock standard response ( ), I'm just going to recount a bit of my own personal experience. I really had to use a crowbar to get myself into Midian RP. That involved getting myself arrested by the MPD for being drunk and disorderly, and trying to feel up Alegria out the front (I wasn't drunk. It was a fake-out), having a look around the cells and then escaping by blowing the door's lock off with an EMP grenade. Unfortunately, being not as experienced as I am now, some godmodding was involved, regrettably, but after that, it was a breeze finding my handy little niche. But it shouldn't have to be like that. I agree with Charles, we shouldn't throw RP at them, but if you see one around, perhaps provide them with the opportunity to do so. Even just something as simple as wolf-whistling as a woman walks past, or mumbling a swear word at a guy would be an easy entry for them to really get stuck in.
On the newbie hunt. I don't want people to have to insert themselves into an RP where they aren't wanted unintentionally. _________________ http://arcsravings.blogspot.com
